Info about the beekeeper:
My name is Jiří Muller (born in 1984), and I have lived my entire life in the highest part of the Opava district, at an altitude of about 500–750 meters above sea level, in Budišov nad Budišovkou. I work as a professional soldier in a nearby military training area. My beehives are located in three apiaries: within the sanitary zone of the Kružberk water reservoir, in Budišov, and near Podlesí nad Odrou (Budišov nad Bud.), close to the Libavá Military Area.
I have been engaged in beekeeping since 2011, starting completely from scratch under the guidance of an enthusiastic beekeeper. From my initial 3 colonies, I had expanded to 35 colonies by the end of 2019.
This rugged yet beautiful region has, in the past 20 years, avoided the trend of intensive large-scale agriculture (thanks to the high altitude) and has instead focused on livestock grazing and ecological farming. Medicinal plants such as milk thistle and crimson clover (trifolium incarnatum), along with various grasses grown for seed, provide abundant forage essential for bees.
The remoteness of this area is also marked by large expanses of forest. Even after the recent bark beetle disaster, the essential forage-providing trees—such as firs, maples, and linden—have fortunately remained mostly unaffected.
