Ing. Jiří Novák – A Family Beekeeping Tradition
Our beekeeping is rooted in a long-standing family tradition, as shown in the attached photograph from 1877. While the tradition hasn’t always been passed directly from father to son—it has continued from uncle to nephew, grandfather to grandson, and so on—it has remained unbroken for nearly 200 years.
Ing. Jiří Novák, born in 1980, is a graduate of the Forestry School in Písek and later the Faculty of Forestry in Brno, where he also completed two semesters of beekeeping under Associate Professor Antonín Přidal.
He lives with his family in the picturesque village of Mašovice on the edge of Podyjí National Park and works as a forester in the park. Currently, he keeps nearly 35 bee colonies using both the 39x24 frame size and the Langstroth system. He also raises queens for his own use. His beekeeping approach combines modern practices with a deep respect for the legacy of past generations. He extracts honey using a stainless-steel radial honey extractor.
Apiary Locations:
Citonice – The site where Jiří began his beekeeping journey. This is an agricultural area rich in fruit trees. In favorable years, there is potential for acacia honey within the bees’ foraging range.
Mašovice – A historically significant site where Jiří’s grandfather Josef also kept bees in a traditional bee house. The location is excellent for beekeeping, with pastures from a former military training area and the nearby Podyjí forest. This site is particularly promising for linden honey.
Nový Hrádek – A forest-surrounded site within the heart of Podyjí National Park, just 500 meters from the impressive forest castle Nový Hrádek near Lukov. Sheltered and rich in early spring flora, the area is full of flowering plants and trees. The entire landscape is influenced by the meandering Dyje River, which naturally forms the border between the Czech Republic and Austria. On the Austrian side lies Thayatal National Park.
